“Going Green” is the most popular theme this
year, a trend we’re seeing in color and
design as much as in other areas like
recycling, and energy consumption. People
are seeing green as a statement not only of
eco-consciousness, but as a way of showing
support for our planet, and an over-all
shift from consumer to caretaker. Shades of
green evoke a feeling of peace and serenity,
especially when paired with warm, neutral
browns and creams, punched up with an
intense fern or ebony for accent. Painting a
powder bath with vibrant greens and a splash
of bright pink is a sure fix for those with
a case of the “beige-blahs”. A bedroom
painted the right shade of green can help
reduce anxiety before sleep, and create a
more “Zen” atmosphere, evoking a oneness
with nature.
Another popular trend this year is that of
sophistication and sharp contrast. The
elegance of a simple black and white color
scheme invites an infinite array of accent
color possibilities; anything from pale
yellow to intense Caribbean blue. Silhouette
and calligraphic designs work well in a
tone-on-tone color scheme. Monochromatic
palettes are popping up from dining rooms to
children’s rooms; a simple and inspiring
combination can be just what the doctor
ordered to refresh a stale room. Purples are
making a big statement this year, from soft
lavender to rich aubergine, look for all
hues of purple in this year’s hottest color
trends.
We’re also seeing an increased interest in
hand painted art, including trompe l’Oeil
and mural ornamentation. “Assembly line” art
is on the way out; people are seeking custom
designs and unique art pieces instead.
Historical influences are making a comeback
in design; our clients are requesting more
carved archways and hand painted details,
along with sculpted wall finishes and
textures. Anything that brings back the old
charm of European gardens and palazzos is in
high demand, especially if it brings the
outdoors inside, like a fountain or statue.
Thank heavens the "80's fantasy-faux" is
out- We're thrilled to report that no one is
asking for sponge painting! It's high time
for some high design.

Some tips for choosing color
Start Small
Try out a new color in a powder room, or one
wall, and remember its just paint; you have
nothing to lose by trying something new, you
may surprise yourself!
Feel the Mood
Remember that colors are representative of
feeling and mood. Try and find a color that
reflects the way you want that room to feel,
and you’ll have more success the first time
around.
Look to Fashion
Color trends trickle down from the fashion
designers, and it all starts in Paris and
New York. Look to the runways for upcoming
seasonal trends and color combinations.
